Is "notwithstanding" a direct synonym for "despite?"


For example:

Can I say "Chosen team captain, notwithstanding my being the newest player" just as easily as I could say "Chosen team captain, despite my being the newest player?"

You could also use it the other way round:

Being the newest player notwithstanding, I was chosen team captain.
