think about doesn't quite capture the meaning even though it's similar. would like to know is fairly synonymous; you could use that. am curious about is perfect.

Strange. To state that you wonder something is not a question. It might be intonation.

This is the sentence in the text book. It even has the verb 'asked'.

“I wonder how Mrs. Bentley is?” the sergeant asked.

Yes, but by implication he's asking about her health, so the use of "asked" isn't so strange. It's a different kind of asking. It's not saying directly, "How is Mrs. Bentley?" I think it could be a British thing.
