Hi Teachers,

Could you tell, if the given synonyms are appropriate to 'could' according to the context of the sentence? If not could you tell me a better one?

Two policemen in a small village police station could hear the wind outside.

Although it would sound odd.

I though about this one. In fact, I wrote it and then erased it.

I'll only use 'were able of'
