Synonyms

Hello,

If one word is defined by another are they always synonyms and in all senses?

For example, the words Fine and Choice.

Fine

1.of superior or best quality; of high or highest grade: fine wine.

2.
choice, excellent, or admirable: a fine painting.

Choice

8.worthy of being http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/chosen; excellent; superior.

9.
carefully selected: choice words.

Are they synonyms only in the underlined meanings?

Thanks

Oh, it does create many problems. The problem is that words that are listed as synonyms are not always synonyms.

At the end of the word choice I paid attention to this; See http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fine1

In this case, consider "choice" a synonym for "fine" only in the sense that each shares of being excellent.
