Synonymous sentences needed?

Hi! everyone, I want to know,in which more ways I can imply the meaning of this sentence?
This sentence is about a leader who for his brutal vested interests(you can say killing of a particular tribe) convince peoples to hate Love.
-:He was the leader who gained his vested interests under false pretenses about love to make peoples hate love.
And my second try-:
He was the leader who hand knitted many false stories about love to make peoples hate love.
Could you tell me the better ways of saying this sentence,I will be very glad.
Thanks!
