Hi imantaghavi,

Thank so much for your reply.

'In a rush' won't help my students, still too difficult for them. Though it is an excellent synonym.

How about?

They are walking really fast because they are in a condition of urgency.

Hi,

Grammatically spoken, correct, but I'd prefer the following one:

They are walking really fast because they are in an urgent condition.

Hi Clive,

Thank you for your reply. Well, even though the sentence is right, very right. I'm looking for an explanation for the students. If I give them the verb 'hurry' as an explanation, it won't help very much.

They are walking really fast because they don't have (much time)(time to waste).

Probably the underlined choice is better in that sentence.

Hi,

I thought the problem was to explain the idiom 'in a hurry'.

If you simply want a definition of the word 'hurry', why not refer to a Learners' Dictionary? eg

Hi canadian45,

Thank you for your reply. The underlined choice (much time) is the best one according to the conext.

Hi Clive,

I thought the problem was to explain the idiom 'in a hurry'.

Yes, it is. But to my understanding if I use, 'because they need to hurry' to explain 'in a hurry', The students won't get the meaning.
