Synonym for COMBINATION

Does anyone know a specialized term for COMBINATION?

1 How many different ___ can you come up with with the numbers 1,2,3,4,5?

Thanks

I don't know of a term other than combinations. Maybe a mathematician could help us out here. [Edit - I just thought of another possible term: arrangements]

Hi,

I'd say 'permutations'.

A specialised mathematical term is "permutation", but this would mean that all of the five numbers must be used. For instance, possible permutations of your set of numbers are (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) (2, 1, 3, 4, 5) (3, 2, 1, 4, 5) etc. -- The order is important here.

Is this what you where looking for, or did you have in mind also combinations like (1,2) (1,2,3) etc?

The mathematical term is combination. There is, however, another mathematical term, permutation, in which the order makes a difference.

To avoid an unnecessarily long post, let's use only the letters A, B, and C.

How many combinations are there of A, B, and C?
