Synonym?

Hi, does anyone know of a synonym or another way of saying "in an attempt to"? I've used it twice in two paragraphs which are close together. This is the once which I think would be easier to change,,,
Would "as he tried to stay dry" work?

By the time they arrived at a busy high street, the wind had turned the umbrella inside out, their clothes were stuck to their skin, and their father had pulled his shirt’s collar up in an attempt to stay dry.
