Symptoms

I was taught that when e.g. flu symptoms get worse, it is known as an exacerbation - symptoms exacerbate.
Is it correct to say, in the same context, that symptoms strengthen?

Thank you

Hi, I would not say 'exacerbation'. 'Exacerbate' means ' make worse'. eg The patient's scratching exacerbated his rash.
