Sympathy/Sympathies

----------------------------
NYTimes(1):
" 'Our deepest sympathy goes out to the veterans affected by the Avastin eye injections,' it said in a statement."

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/30/world/asia/deadly-attack-strikes-nato-bus-in-kabul.html?pagewanted=all:
" 'Our deepest sympathies go out to their comrades and families, but it will not deter us from our mission,' he said. ' It’s a shock, but we will not let these guys win.' "

How is "sympathy" different from "sympathies"? Any rules of thumb?

I know of no rule of thumb, but I prefer the plural form.
