Sympathetic to ...

Hi

My grandpa was a cattle rancher, and his father was a cattle rancher, and his father was a
cattle rancher. And my own father was too, except that he really did not care for the cattle business and soon got out of it. He ended up going to medical school and then spent the later part of his life treating diabetes in Fargo. But we still ate like we were in the cattle business. I have vivid memories of bringing cattle to slaughter and that kind of thing.
Now, all of those people were good, decent folks, and I am sympathetic to how people have gotten into these walks of life.

Does by saying “I am sympathetic to” he means that he sympathizes with them (he is sorry for them) or that he understands them?

So, he understands how these good, decent folks got into this business or he is sorry for them because he knows how they got into this business? Or maybe “people” here are people in general and not the good and decent ones he knew?

The background context to this seems to be that the speaker is advocating a vegetarian diet for various medical reasons. I assume the "good, decent folks" are cattle farmers and meat producers, and he is saying he is understanding of how people became involved in the meat production industry, even though he is now advocating against it. id=BEKTvTlNiFwC&pg=PA28
