symbol/icon/logo/avartar

Soon other products bearing the superman symbol hit the market, and it wasn't long before the superhero was the star of his own television show.

I have problem in distinguishing symbol from icon, logo, and avartar. Could you describe their basic differences in a few words? Thanks.

None of these are right. Superman (capital S) was a character. Are you referring to the S that he has one his costume, or to a picture of the guy himself?

I guess that the right word is inscription.

This is what Word Web has to say about your words:

2. A visual representation (of an object or scene or person or abstraction) produced on a surfac
