0 Hey everyone,02br 00I was recently assigned an English project that requires me to analyze the poetry and life of a classic poet. One of the poets to choose from is Sylvia Plath. After reading a bit about her life I was very interested. I think interest in the poet is what is most important as most of the project consists of writing about the poet rather than their poetry (ie. writing a diary entry that they might have written between the ages of 15-30, a letter by the poet's publisher, their obituary, etc). However, I still have to analyze the theme of one poem and write a short 8 line poem in the style of the poet. The problem is I don't really understand Plath's poetry (then again, I find most poetry confusing). Each poem seems to be a series of unconnected thoughts. For example, the poem "Words":02br 02br 00 Axes02br 00After whose stroke the wood rings,02br 00And the echoes!02br 00Echoes traveling02br 00Off from the center like horses.02br 02br 00The sap02br 00Wells like tears, like the02br 00Water striving02br 00To re-establish its mirror02br 00Over the rock02br 02br 00That drops and turns,02br 00A white skull,02br 00Eaten by weedy greens.02br 00Years later I02br 00Encounter them on the road----02br 02br 00Words dry and riderless,02br 00The indefatigable hoof-taps.02br 00While02br 00From the bottom of the pool, fixed stars02br 00Govern a life.02br 02br 00Any help understanding Plath's style of poetry would be appreciated 050010id1

0Yep, I did read her bio. Her life was the main reason I wanted to choose her as there is a lot of interesting material to work with. But even if her mental state was a little "off" (for lack of a better word) I thought the unconnected thought style of her poetry was deliberate? I'm not sure, but people seem to think her poetry was pretty great. Anyway, thanks for the reply julielai 05000

I understand her poetry a lot and she has had a fascinating life if not an unfortunate one. He poems are quite fantastic and are full of wonder, she's one of the better poets in my opinion. I studied her poetry for two years.
Black Rook in Rainy Weather is quite a good poem. Also, Child, Morning Song, Finisterre to name a few that are great. If you need any information on these poems or
