Syllabus division

Hi,

Would anyone please help me and tell me the exact rule of dividing syllables?

For example for the word "applicant", it is said to have three sylables. How?

Is that the matter of vowels division?

Any help is highly appreciated in advance,

Iman

Dear Obaid,

That was amazingly fruitful.

But how about "interesting"? It has four vowels, but I wonder if it must be placed in three-syllabled words.Isn't that the matter of how we pronounce a word?

Because when we pronunce the word "interesting" it seems to have three vowls(the first "e" isn't pronunced).

Thank you in advance,

Iman

Um, tricky one!

I'd have said it's a three-syllable word, but Merriam Webster spells it as a four-syllable one!

Interesting is one of those interesting words that can be pronounced two ways: in this case, either as in-ter-est-ing or in-trest-ing.
