That's correct. Those syllables are either very weak or not pronounced at all.

I agree with CJ, with one exception. "Separate", when used to mean "distinct", e.g. in "Separate but equal", has the elided vowel sound. However, when used to mean "divide", e.g. in "Separate the wheat from the chaff", the a is definitely pronounced.
