Syllables

Hi,
I am wondering how many syllables does "student" have? How do we count syllables?
Does one syllable include only one vowel and as many consonants as we can?
In that case, "student" would have 2 syllables?

How about "frequent"? Does it have 3 syllables or 2 syllalbes?
Do we count "quent" as one syllable? Or we count "fre-qu-ent"?

Thanks,
