Switch up

Let's say that you're working hard on something and your friend tells you that he/she will help you out so that you can take a break.

"We switched up so that I could pop into the supermarket to buy something to eat."

Would 'switch up' be appropriate in this case? I saw this phrase in a book where the writer says: "The soldiers often switched up on guard duty."

Thank you!
