Switch (the old car) to a new car

Willy is hoping to switch to a new car next month.

Hi,

Is there "the old car" after "switch" in the above because it's understood and therefore omitted?

Besides, is it the same to say "change/exchange the old car for a new one?" Thanks.

Yes, he's hoping to switch from the old car to a new one next month. "exchange" is different from switch. It's synonymous with "swap".
