Swirl incense smoke ...

Hi

In a book about magic an author writes about home altars.

He says:

If you fashion such an altar, call upon the powers or deities to bless and guard your home. Infuse it with positive, magical, uplifting vibrations. Swirl incense smoke and attune.

1. Does it say that at the time when I'm fashioning the altar I should also call upon the powers and deities?

2. I'm not sure how to understand "swirl incense smoke"? Am I supposed to take a censer and wave it to spread the smoke around?

1. In that sentence , "if" has the meaning of "when" or "whenever" so the sentence says that the action of fashioning an alter should always be accompanied by "calling upon the power or deities...". The two actions don't necessarily need to be simultaneous even though they can be.
