Swing workshift.

Hi all,

I just have translated. for my friends second episode of the actual CSI Las Vegas show. (piece of cake..:-). Anyway, at the end of this episode, Sara Siddle said to Grissom, that "She is gonna move to Swing workshift." I have translated it like afternoon workshift and I have to say, that I took me a lot of time to dig out on the internet the right meaning of this phrase. So I am just curious, why it is being called Swing workshift? Why just not simply afternoon workshift? Why Swing?

thank you and CSI LV go go!

cheers JCD.

m. until midnight, is an American coinage evidently born during World War II. Such shifts apparently were called "swing shifts" because they seemed to "swing" between the established day and night shifts.

Hi,

Here's one theory, from the Word Detective at http://www.word-detective.com/091801.html

"Swing shift," usually considered to mean the hours between around 4 p.m. until midnight, is an American coinage evidently born during World War I

Grammar GeekAnd did you get the "Ricky Bobby" reference?

Hi GG,

yes, I did. It was an allusion to the famous movie called The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Ricky Bobby was an fast NASCAR race driver in this comedy. So, in the context of CSI LV, maybe Grissom is slow driver and Nick Stokes had been pointing to that fact...:-).
