Swing open

Hi,

What does "swing open" mean? Does it mean the sudden and big opening of the gate?

A key turned in the lock and the heavy gate swung open.

Thank you.

It describes the kind of motion the gate always does when being opened. The sentence would be fine without the "swung" part but with it the action (of opening the gate) sounds more emphatic. A key turned in the lock and the heavy gate opened.
