Swine seems more formal to me. But then we do say "chicken pox" and not, what, "poultry pox."

We're calling it H1N1 flu over here now, anyway. Not sure whether it's because the Israelis considered the other name http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeq

Swine is the family of animals that includes pigs and wild boars. Pork is the meat of a pig.

It is called swine flu for political reasons. The H1N1 flu is actually a swine flu not the swine flu. There have been other mutations of swine flu before. Furthermore, it is less "swine flu" than others. The H1N1 flu is actually a fusion of swine, bird and human flus.

Hi,

Then the Canadian pork producers objected, and that's when I started to see the name H1N1.

Best wishes, Clive

Hello,
"Not sure whether it's because the Israelis considered the other name offensive,"
why is that?

Thanks

Because, like Muslims, they consider pork unclean. I think I put a link. They suggested calling it "Mexican flu."
