Swimming

Sri Lanka's government has declared a state of emergency hours after Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar was killed outside his home by sniper fire that struck him in his head and chest.

Kadirgamar had just returned to his home for a swim after attending a function for the release of a book he edited, police said.

I think the second sentence of the above is flawed. What it wants to say is that he returned home after swimming.
Even if you have a swimming pool at your house, you wouldn't say I came home for a swim.

It should be something like he returned home after swimming.
What do you think?

Hello Rotter I would infer that he did indeed have a swimming pool, or lived near the sea. It's quite hot out there, so you might well go home for a swim, after a tiring event. MrP

I was born and bred there.

I listned and watch BBC and CNN news. I didn't hear that he got a pool there. Which news channel you listen to?

I know he belonged to an affluent family. Such people have swimming pools at home. He was educated at Oxford.

The second sentence is not flawed if in fact he went home to swim. It is telling you why he went home "for a swim" and he went home after attending a function ....

Your sentence "It should be something like he returned home after swimming" suggests that he swam first and then went home. That is not what the sentence is saying. Are you sure that the sentence meant to say what you
