Yes it's true. I don't know if it's only British.

Women can wear a bikini, a swimsuit or swimming costume. For me there is no difference between a swimsuit and swimming costume when

What do you call the one-piece swimsuit that athletes wear that covers the whole body?

Swimsuit or swimming costume.

I see. So you would call what a female athelete wears a swimming costume/swimsuit while a male athlete a swimming costume only.

Yes I would. For a male I would use swimming costume or swimming trunks, if he is only wearing trunks.

Note - "swimming costume" is not common in the U.S. "Swimsuit" for men or women, "swim trunks" or "swimming trunks" for men.

("Costume" in the U.S. usually suggests "masquerade" -- to me, "swimming costume" suggests that perhaps you are going swimming disguised as a shark.)

Hi,
