MARY GEARIN:
Central to the
campus is a specially designed building called wadambawilam or 'learning place',
a working example for students of sustainable resources, designed for maximum insulation, using solar panels and windmills for power.
But taking
pride of place is the first ,
state of the art, dairy.
The dairy has been designed for both education and
production.
But despite the kick bars and the splash plates, the dairy still seems to offend the delicate sensibilities of city kids.
Julian Bennet runs this as a genuine commercial venture. We hope to aim it at about 200 cows, 220 cows,
and then from there on increase production not by cow numbers,
but more by herd improvement by genetics, and also by increasing the feed into the cows, better to lift the production
per cow up, hopefully aiming at a figure of around about 1.2 million litres a year.
MARY GEARIN: Of course,
the dairy keeps to the environmental theme, using
recycled storage pond water for wash downs.
JULIAN BENNET: As
well, we are looking at the dairy putting the nutrients back on the property, back on the farm.
We have got a
slurry tanker and during the summer, especially onto crops like turnips, we do put the
slurry back on those and hopefully
save on fertilizer further down the track.
The students will continue to
monitor the dairy through an
internal computer link up at school, and
use their lessons from the camp in subjects, and years, to follow.
