suss out

Hi,

What sort of register does the word "suss" have, as in:

"They had to suss out whether he was telling the truth."
"I think I've got him sussed out."

I have some dictionaries that say the word is a slang and some others that do not flag it for even being informal.

Thank you.

I would judge it as informal. It doesn't strike me as slang. Maybe it's somewhere in between the two.

Suss is mainly a BrE usage.
I would place it as informal at best.

How commonly is the word used in daily conversations in North America today? Thank you.

It is not used where I live (SE USA). I don't know how much it is used elsewhere in the US, or in Canada. I think of it as BrE, and only qualified it as "mainly" since CalifJim appeared to recognize it.

Almost never. And then, only by people who may have heard it on imports from British television.
