John was sentenced on Monday to 2½ years, with all but one year suspended.

Can you tell me if John is going to serve one and an a half years for jail time? or his sentenced is to be delayed a year later to be carried out?

all but one year suspended. = all (except one year ) suspended = 1.5 years suspended.
