Surviving hunger?!

Hi.
I've ran into a problem:
If a shark has not eaten for y generations, it dies.
What to call this 'y generations'?

"generations" seems an inappropriate time measure to use. "y generations" means y times the typical age difference between parents and their offspring. In the case of sharks, this would presumably be several years. It seems unlikely that a shark could survive for anywhere near that long without eating.
