Survive being fired

Hi,

I have a sentence

"This object will survive being fired at high temperatures."

My question is about the grammar of the sentence above.

What is the word class that the phrase "being fired" used as. (noun, verb, adject or what)

Also, are there still other ways to rewrite that sentence with the same meaning?

Thank you very much.

PS - "While you are firing it, this object will survive high temperatures" is less ambiguous.
