Surveys show that people are living longer in many countries. But increased life expectancy has many implications for ageing individuals and for society as a whole. What are the possible effects of longer living for individuals and society?

Recently, it has become evident that the world's older population grows at an unprecedented rate. While it is argued by some that this trend is likely to have negative effects, senior people can sometimes bring benefits to both individuals and global levels. These aspects will be analysed in this essay.

There are some merits associated with increased longevity. Firstly, elders can share their precious knowledge and experiences which young generation may utilise in order to improve their life's quality. Secondly, it is undeniable that increased lifespan can give older people a chance to complete what they have dreamed of. Take my grandfather as an example. He has spent his retired life to write a book about the cuisine of Vietnam which enables young generation to explore their traditional meals as well as to save their cultural diversity. What this will lead to is that the life's quality will be enhanced.

On the contrary, increasing life expectancy tend to raise youth's burden, affecting their career and welfare. If the number of senior people rose, governments would need to spend more fund for medical care and other facilities which creates more pressure on taxpayers. Additionally, family members need to devote time to take care of their elders, as a consequence, their promotion prospects will be declined because their working time is deprived.

In conclusion, although increasing longevity contributes to the protection of cultural heritage which is in danger of being lost, it can also cause sufferings as well as negative impacts on youth's career.
