Survey?

Our software seems to cause an error. We are going to ask people how the error is.

If I call this check "investigation" or "research", they are too pompous. It would be a bit heavier than "check". Do you call it "Survey"?

A 'survey' sounds like you are going to ask people's opinions about a standard set of questions.
I'd just say 'investigate or 'look into.'

'how the error is' sounds very odd. Do you mean 'what the error is? What would you actually ask people? What actual question?
