'surround' singlular or plural?

Hi gang,

I am writing a paper and I am unsure which use of the word surround is correct here:

"that assumes no responsibility for the realities of life that surround her."

OR

"that assumes no responsibility for the realities of life that surrounds her."

cheers,
nap
