Grammar

surprisingly and unexpected

Because the company had advertised the position in a local newspaper, the number of inquiries was surprisingly and unexpected.

This is a TOEIC question, and I have to identify where the error in the sentence is. Something wrong with the last phrase surprisingly and unexpected . Why? Please advise.

Hi LCChange, Here are some hints: What is it that is being described by the phrase? Does what's being described require an adjective or an adverb? What can you change in the phrase to make it be the right part of speech?

Ooops! I am terribly sorry! Actually the original sentence is:

Because the company had advertised the position in a local newspaper, the number of inquiries was surprising and unexpected.

However, the answer key says these two words are redundant. Using either one is enough. Are they really redundant?
