Surprising vs. as surpising

The end of the movie was not surprising.
The end of the movie was not as surprising.

1. I believe both are correct above, but what is the difference between "suprising" and "as surprising" above?
2. How is the meaning changed by adding 'as' before the adjective?

The first sentence is correct and states the fact that the end of the movie contained no surprises. The second sentence cannot stand on it's own. It is a comparative statement.
