Surprised by or surprised with

How would you phrase the following sentences?

He surprised his opponent (by/with) how far he shot the ball.

He surprised his opponent (with/by) how far a shoot he took.

His opposent was surprises (by/with) how far he shot the ball from.

When the verb is active and the object of the preposition is a clause, "with" doesn't sound natural to me. Neither with the passive.

But: "He surprised his opponent with a left hook."
