Surprise vs take ~ by surprise

Are there any difference between "She surprised me " and "She took me by surprise"? Thanks in advance!

I find it hard to detect any difference in meaning. I wondered at first whether "took me by surprise" might tend to be used more for a physical surprise, or sudden surprise, like someone entering a room unexpectedly. Now I'm thinking that this distinction is quite marginal, if it exists at all.

I wondered the same when I first read the question. I came to the same conclusion.
