The thing about surfing is that when you're out there waiting for the waves, sometimes the wait is for nothing, and you're just out there stagnant doing nothing. That's what really got to me. Or I that's what really gets me.
Should I use got or gets.
The reason why I'm inclined to use got is because I'm referring to past experiences, but can I use the present tense as well?
Thanks!

Use a past tense if you are referring to past experiences.
