Surf or surfing?

Hello,

I need to ask you two questions:

1) Students were asked to answer a questionnaire: the question said "What was the activity that you did on holiday? Some answered: "The best activity I did was surf". Is it correct? or should they say "surfing"?

2) The following sentences sound wrong to me but I do not know why: "The restaurant was one of luxury".

Thank you for your help !!!!!

  • Soprano Some answered: "The best activity I did was surf".
  • Is it correct?
  • or should they say "surfing"?
  • surf is used as a verb, so What I did was surf is OK.
  • But the word activity occurs in the first part, so that changes things.

surf is used as a verb, so What I did was surf is OK. But the word activity occurs in the first part, so that changes things. *The activity was surf is not grammatical. I would say surfing in this case.

CJ, why do you object to the restaurant one?

His look was one of pity.
His home was one of poverty.
The restaurant was one of luxury.

Completely on stylistic grounds I think. It sounds stuffy to me -- like saying My friend GG is one of intelligence and good humor. What's the phrase? De gustibus non disputandum-- or some such Latin thing about there being no arguing about taste.

Oh, good, we agree. It's not the more natural phrasing, but it's not incorrect. Thank you.

Isn't she a goofball? I've always wondered how cats do that. If you were lying on your stomach and yet managed to touch the back of your head to the surface, they'd probably be using the Jaws of Life to extract you. They would me, anyway.
