Sure & Surely

Hi,

I have a simple questions towards the usage of 'sure' and 'surely'. I think I am able to use 'Surely' like this way:

Surely it is a must for me to speed up the fulfillment of this work.

But can I use Sure like this?

Sure it is a must for me to speed up the fulfillment of this work

I guess not, I just want a confirmation from you, especially from who have English as their native language. Really thanks for your help!

Regards,

Daniel

Hi, Surely it is a must for me to speed up the fulfillment of this work. Basically OK, although I think you mean completion rather than fulfillment. But can I use Sure like this?

A different way to think about "Sure""

We use "surely" for all the meanings explained in the linked post.

But we can use "Sure," (with the comma) to show that *I* know this, and I'm establishing in your mind that I know it, even though something else that has been or is about to be spoken is in apparent contrast with this.

"Surely Jim is no longer with the company!" vs.

You could say that "sure" refers to what is sure, while "surely" refers to what ought to be sure (at least in BrE).

Surely you didn't tell him!? = I hope you didn't tell him.
Surely I left my case here = Isn't this where I left my case?
