It might be a good idea to first define "status symbol." My dictionary tells me that it refers to something that you have

that lets other people know your position in society.

All people wear clothes. When people see the clothes that you are wearing, they can try to make a guess as to your

social class, educational background, etc. I am guessing that you are very young. so maybe you do not know this:

many years ago in Europe, everyone had to dress according to his position in society. If you were a workman, you had

to dress as other workmen dressed. If you had the money to buy very expensive clothes worn by the rich people, you were

not allowed to wear them. Everybody was expected to keep his/her place. Today, of course, when you see a man in an

expensive suit, you really do not know whether he is rich or poor. We are allowed to wear what we want. You said that

your teacher would accept an illustration. Maybe you could prepare pictures of how rich people dressed in the 18th

century and how the poor people dressed. That would show how clothes were a status symbol.

Sometimes clothes can be a dangerous status symbol. Have you heard about American juvenile gangs? They are

groups of teenagers or people in their twenties who often do very bad things. Gangs often have a favorite color that they

wear in their neighborhoods. It is a status symbol. They want other people to say, "Look at him. He is a member of the

X gang. Wow! " If someone is NOT a member of the X gang and wears that color, sometimes the X gang will hurt that

person. As you can see, clothes are a powerful possession that we have.

A status symbol is something that tells other people that we are special. Do doctors wear blue jeans and a T-shirt?

Of course, not. They often wear a white laboratory coat. Such clothes give them status or

prestige. When you gradaute from college, do you wear blue jeans? Of course, not. You wear a cap and gown. It gives

you status. It tells the world that you are special.

When I was young, all nurses wore nice white uniforms. When you saw them, you knew they were nurses. The uniforms gave them

status. They reminded us of the beloved Miss Florence Nightingale. Today in the United States, most nurses now wear regular clothes

(often a blouse and pants!). IMHO, they have lost some of their status (prestige or respect) in the eyes of many people.

Some people think that you should "look the part." That is one reason why police officers and soldiers wear uniforms. Almost

all teachers here in States used to (no more) wear suits and neckties/ dresses. But today some people do NOT want to show their

status. They want to look like "regular" people like you and me. So, for example, many nuns of the Roman Catholic Church no longer

wear their traditional clothing in the United States. I can no longer identify who is a nun and who isn't.
