Supper vs dinner

Hi.

What is the difference between dinner and supper?

some dictionaries consider supper before dinner and some after it, and it is different in British English and AmericanEnglish which makes it more confusing.

Thanks for your time and help

That's right, it is confusing, and sometimes you have to ask your host which meal s/he is speaking of. There is no single intrinsic difference in the meanings of the two words when speaking of an evening meal.

If you type 'supper dinner' in the search box at the top right corner of the page, you'll find several previous discussions.

Urban Americans have breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and dinner is usually a bigger meal than lunch.

Rural Americans have breakfast, dinner, and supper, and dinner is usually a bigger meal than supper.

I can't answer for the British except when they say "tea", I think "supper".

And that clears that one up for me - I've always been fuzzy on who says what, and why I, as a suburban child, scramble them mercilessly.
