superlative without article?

Hi,
(In the New International Version) In Jude 13, it is written:

They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wondering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.

1) Why no article before what looks to be the superlative 'blackest'? I think we can use some superlatives as adjectives in a predicative position but is it possible before a noun? I think this is possible: He is strongest.

We could describe the omission of the as poetic licence. Another similar feature is to employ whom to refer to stars. Stars are not people!
