Grammar

superlative and plural

Hi,

Can you please tell me if we can use plural nouns for what seem to be superlatives?

the tallest men

the most famous singers

the most popular singers

Can you give me some examples to consolidate/further my understanding?

Hi Anon Yes, you can use plural nouns with superlatives. In this case, you would be ranking a group of people/things rather than individual things, or you might be referring to a person or thing that is part of the top (or bottom) category of something. Basketball players are among the tallest men in the world.

Hi. Do we need to have the definite article "the" before the phrase "most cards" and "most coins" in the following sentences? Thank you for your help in advance.

1. The person with (the?) most cards wins.
2. Of all the people here, John Doe has (the?) most coins.
