Superintendents and principal

Hi,

Can you tell me in the context of school system, what roles do superintendents and principals play and what are their relationship? Here is a sentence from a paper, which confuses me on the two terms.

Superintendents lead and supervise schools and programs, and work with principals and school staff to ensure schools operate according to ministry and district school board policy.
