Vocabulary

Sundress, jumper, etc.

Hi there,

If you could answer the following questions?

(1) "pinafore dress" v "sundress". Are these fully interchangeable?
(2) I wonder if the word "sarafan" (= 'pinafore dress' in Russian ) makes sense to most English speakers (cf "babushka", "dacha", etc.)?

(3) I wonder if "jumper" and "pinafore dress" are used equally frequently in AmEng. (All i know is that "jumper" is an Americanism...)

cheers,

Mus-te

Jumper in British English is a sweater in American English. Pinafore is a very old-fashioned dress in American English. It is the same style as jumper, but I think of it as being fancier.
