Summer or the summer

Would you answer my question?
Which of the two is correct? If both are correct, which is common?

A: Summer is the hottest season of the year.
B: The summer is the hottest season of the year.
I meant both sentences to be general ones, not particular ones.

I always use A, and that's what I recommend for a general reference. it that begin with "Summer is". There are very many fewer that begin with "The summer is", and those are not general references for the most part.
