He claims decorating people’s face and body with tattoos and painting walls with arousing symbols are considered immoral in his time because ornament should be removed in modern times.
Also, Loos explains objects with decorations were valuable in the past, but cultured people prefer a plain one since they appreciate simplicity; ornament can no longer be pleasure to them. Furthermore, Loos emphasizes that not only is ornament unnecessary, but it is also harmful in economic sense because it entails “the waste of human labor, money, and materials.”
He notes a man whose tastes are simple is getting richer than one who likes decorative things, and that modern laborers earn more than ornamental artisans who works much longer than they do. Since ornament fashion changes as time passes by, Loos believes people will waste money and material because they have to replace an old one with the new style.
