The tragedy of Dr Faustus

‘The tragedy of Dr Faustus’ is a novel by Christopher Marlowe, a writer who lived in the sixteenth century.

The novel takes place in Germany and tells us about Faustus, the most brilliant scholar of his day and who became famous in his university for his knowledge and his wit and it was not long before the University made him ‘Dr’.
However, he wanted to learn something more and one night discovered a book of magic and spells with which entered in an agreement with the Devil: twenty-four years of knowledge. power and riches and then he will have to give his soul to the Devil.

During these twenty-four years, Faustus exerted all his powers with the help of Mephistophilis, a servant of the Devil’s. So he could travel through the important cities of Germany, France and Italy, show his powers to the Emperor by bringing Alexander the Great’s soul back and use his powers to play a lot of tricks on people.
When the twenty-four years of the contract were over, he had to give his soul to Lucifer being torned in pieces by the devils, despite his last repentances to become reconciled with God.

As mentioned above, the story takes place in Germany but the period is not specified, probably during the Middle Ages.

The main characters are Faustus and his servant Mephistophilis, although we meet a lot of other characters as Pope Adrian and his rival Bruno, the Emperor of Germany Charles V, the King of Hungary Raymond, and so on.
