My grandmother would tell him about everything that had been that had been going on in the church as she walked round the house picking things up and putting them away. The news would be served with the tea and cakes we always had on Sundays with him. From the outside, it would have sounded as if we were all having a lively conversation, punctuated by the sound of teaspoons clinking on saucers. When we cleared the tea things away and my grandmother disappeared into the kitchen, a silence would fall over the living room. I would sit quietly with Mr Mackenzie and stare into the glowing embers of the open fire. He would cut up chunks of black tobacco and put them in his pipe and light it. He'd puff away with his eyes almost cloed as the weet mell filled the wam room.
