sui - relates to oneself

-cide - derived from the Latin verb caedere - to kill

Other similar verbs include patricide (killing your father) and regicide (killing a king).

Just to be politically correct, I will add the following.

People "involved" in the situation, no long use the term "commit" with suicide. That word has connotations of having done something criminally wrong. Rather, the word "complete" is now used. "His father completed suicide last week." Completed, of course, rather than

A very common term these days is 'genocide'. See this link for a long list. Most are not at all in common usage

As regards suicide, in many cases I suggest that the best choice of words is to say 'My father died last week' rather than 'My father committed/completed suicide last week'. Most people don't need the details.
